A Word From the Pastor
2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! ~Phil. 2:2-8
It was exciting to see the sanctuary filled with people wanting to worship the Lord and learn from His Word over the weekend. Kris Waller estimated at least 146 attended Good Friday Community Service! It was great to hear so many lifting their voices in song to worship the LORD! We had 78 people attend on Easter Sunday. We have heard that many people really enjoyed the services! Continue to attend and invite family and friends.
The Wednesday morning men’s group has been discussing Thom Rainer’s book, I Could I Might I Can I Should I Will. Chapter 4 is titled I Will Serve. One reason why some people don’t want to attend church is because they might be asked to serve in some capacity. Others are brave enough to go to church, but they want to stay anonymous in the crowd, so they won’t be asked to take on a project or a ministry need. People often attend church seeking to obtain some blessing, guidance, or benefit for themselves and their family. We all have spiritual and relational needs that must be met. But church is not designed solely to be a place for us to have our needs fulfilled. It is also a place where we can serve God and others.
The goal of the Christian life is to become like Christ…in our thoughts and attitudes, in our character traits, in our deeds, in our priorities, and in service to God and others. In Mt. 20:28 Jesus said, “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” On the night that Jesus was betrayed, He took a towel and a basin of water and humbly washed His disciples’ feet. In John 13:13-15, He said, “You call Me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’, and rightly so, for that is what I am. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
Jesus’ ultimate example of being a servant is found in Phil. 2:5-8 (quoted above). Jesus humbled Himself when He was God the Son by leaving the perfect and holy environment of heaven and taking on human flesh, coming to the earth He created in the most vulnerable and humblest ways, being conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary by the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit, being born in a stable and worshiped by shepherds in the field and wise men from the east. As the God-man, Jesus served God obediently and sacrificially, even to the point of going to the cross to be a substitutionary atonement for the sins of mankind.
We are called to take on ourselves the same attitude of servanthood found in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is hard to imagine someone calling themselves a Christ follower and not wanting to attend a Christian Church and not wanting to serve God and others like the One they call their Savior & Lord!
In his book, I Will, Thom Rainer challenges his readers to participate in The Serving Revolution, a 90-day test. “During the 90 days, they are to ask nothing from the church. They are not to complain in any way. In addition, they will commit two hours a week to serving someone else. They might write encouraging letters to other members. They might visit and serve the homebound. They might work in a local mission house (Friendship Coalition). They might clean the church or work in the landscaping around the church facilities. They might pick up trash in the community. They might get involved in a prayer ministry. They might work in the church nursery or preschool” (p.51).
Let me or Kathy know if you want to participate and share how. Remember that Serve Emmett Day is May 20.
Shepherding you with Christs Love,
Lance
Treasure Valley Child Evangelism Fellowship (TVCEF) Fundraiser
Treasure Valley Child Evangelism Fellowship (TVCEF) held a dinner/auction fundraising event on March 24. John Romano, the National Pastor of CEF, gave an inspirational message on why we should seek to evangelize and disciple children. In addition to the silent auction, they auctioned cakes to the highest bidder! Some cakes sold for over $100! Teens connected with TVCEF served a delicious lasagna dinner. John Jamieson, the husband of the TBCEF director Angi, sang two inspirational specials about ministering the good news to children.
Some of the students from the Emmett Good News Club shared the Wordless Book and did a great job.
Dalton Holdren from our GNC at Carberry shares what the color green stands for when using the Wordless Book to share the gospel with others.
David Mathews shared what the color black stands for when using the Wordless Book in sharing the good news of Jesus.
The Promise of Spring
Springtime is a green time
When the leaves come bursting out,
Springtime is a new time
With vitality about.
Springtime is the seed time
When the plants begin to grow.
Springtime is nesting time,
When the birds fly to and from.
Springtime is a fresh time,
when we can begin anew.
Praise the Lord for springtime.
For everything pure and true.

Monthly Women's Group
On the first Monday of every month, women of all ages are invited to meet at 6:30PM in the FBC Fellowship Hall.
The ladies met on April 6 and had a great time! We had 10 ladies in attendance. Cyndi Butticci led us in a craft of creating prayer pails (see picture below). On each stick is someone, or something, to pray about. Cyndi also led a follow up discussion on the topic of "Heaven is Our Home". She shared several bible references and shared from the book, Heaven, by Randy Alcorn, which helped to reinforce that heaven is real and as believers, we can look forward to our home in heaven. Gerry Knight used Easter eggs to facilitate a session of sharing. Those who's egg color was chosen shared a little about themselves.
We do have some interest in smaller groups and/or partnerships and we have a couple that should be starting soon:
- Janet Holland has offered to host, and/or teach, a knitting group! If you are interested, contact Janet at 208-369-1145.
- Gerry Knight and Carol Rainey are working with a group of ladies to coordinate a family game night! Tentatively looking at May 18 at 6pm for the first one (details coming soon!)
Even if you are unable to join in on the monthly meetings but may be interested in one of the following small groups/events, please let Margaret, Kathy or Shirley know.
- Bible Study/Small Group (in-depth/i.e. Beth Moore/Pricella Schirer, etc.)
- Craft Ministry
- Visitation Ministry
- Lunch/Coffee Club/Prayer
- Ladies Retreat (Get away to study, fellowship and have fun!)
- Game Night
Once enough people have expressed an interest in one of the above areas, those individuals can discuss and determine the details of what, when, etc.
Our next meeting will be May 1st! We hope you will come check it out!
If you have questions, contact Margaret Castle (208-369-6986) or Kathy Osborn (208-921-7938) or Shirley Bearry (208) .716-4096.

Rebecca Espinoza Earned Her US Citizenship!
Rebecca began her quest to become a US Citizen in 2010. After a long, rigorous process including going through the time of COVID-19, she became a US Citizen on March 8, 2023!
The process is not an easy one and it takes time even when pandemics are not a factor. Rebecca had many requirements to meet; such as obtaining residence, finding a family sponsor, financial requirements, and 2 years of meeting certain conditions then having to request those conditions be removed. This is just a small sample of what she went through, but she considers it a "forever privilege to be part of this country!" She feels she is so blessed!"
Mike and Sally Sturman - Celebrating Membership!
Mike and Sally Sturman completed Class 101 and have become official members of the First Baptist Church! They have been attending for quite some time and Mike helps on some Sundays in the Media room. Congratulations to them and to FBC!!!
Calling all “Sherlock Holmes” Wannabes!
Investigative Assignment
Some years ago, I thought that I would try to grow a unique/better mushroom (even though I don’t particularly like mushrooms)… thinking that maybe I could make a “name” for myself… Something different than “Jimbo” or “Hey you”.
Since retirement happened, I have had more time to work on it, and have made major strides (I have mushed, (Jimism’) right along so to speak). Achieving the quality, taste, shape, and size for the “number one” product I was lookin’ for. I gave, or bred, in it a distinctive two-line band around the stem. So all would know that it is of higher quality/value.
NOW THE PROBLEM IS!! I had only “ONE” and now have lost or misplaced that one. The last I knew I had taken it to church to see how it would do in different temperatures and noise levels, got distracted and, well, you know what I mean. So again, I ask for your help to find this before it “shrivels up”. Please be gentle, remember there is only one in the world, like you and me.
A reward is offered for the one ‘Sherlock Holmes” out there that returns my mushroom directly to me unharmed.

Getting Out of My Quiet-Time Rut
By LYSA TERKEURST
“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1 (NIV)
Do you ever find yourself in a rut with reading your Bible?
Uninspired, unmotivated … and maybe a little guilty that you feel that way?
Even as a Bible teacher, I have days when my quiet time with God just feels more routine than full of revelations.
Having quiet time is a good thing. Prayer and Bible reading are spiritual disciplines I want woven into my life every single day. But I’m realizing even good things need to be switched up sometimes.
Otherwise, I might start seeing my time with God as less important. It becomes the second or third thing I do. After other things. Seemingly more pressing things. Before I know it, it’s been days since I connected privately and personally with God and His Truth.
And then my soul feels off-kilter and sluggish. Like the time in between breakfast and lunch when my stomach has been denied food, and desperation starts creeping over other parts of my body. That happens with soul hunger too.
The triggers for stomach hunger are much more apparent. My brain quickly reminds me, You feel awful because it’s lunchtime and you need food! But sometimes my brain isn't as quick to pick up on soul hunger.
So I just keep moving forward but wondering, What’s wrong? I think of a list of reasons: I’m tired, I haven’t had enough fun, the weather has been blah, or my hormones are off. And some of those things may be true, but they’re not why my soul is depleted.
I need more time with God. And not just more quiet time. I need more listening time. Like the writer of Psalm 63:1 needed when he said, “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.”
Recently, as I sat with God with nothing but willingness to listen, some fresh ideas popped into my mind, and I want to share them with you. Here are three ways I'm listening to God:
- Give my first thoughts to God by giving Him my first five minutes every day. I read Bible verses or my morning devotional before I check anything else on my phone. I ask God to help me apply what I'm reading to my life that day. I worship. I listen.
- Read something from someone I admire and trust. I pick up a biblically based book written by someone I admire, and I glean from their godly wisdom. Right now, there’s a book I’m reading that is whimsical and grounded all at the same time. It makes me feel like this writer gets me. They get my struggles and offer up advice I know I can trust. I listen.
- Remember God’s faithfulness by reading past journals, recalling answered prayers, or even pausing for 60 seconds. Rather than trying to predict the future, I can trace God’s faithfulness in my past. He was faithful then. He will be faithful now. I can breathe in His promises for today. Shake off the anxiety. And be filled with deeper assurance of His presence. I listen.
Maybe you think all this still sounds like quiet time, but to me it's different. It's listening time. A time to shake things up a bit and get outside my normal routine. A time to listen to God speak. And He does speak — through His book of wisdom, through people I admire and trust, and through His own faithful character.
And this morning? My soul felt that thrilling and comforting full feeling. Complete. Satisfied. Deeply nourished.
Friends, time spent in God’s Word is indeed never wasted.
Dear Lord, my deepest desire is to grow a stronger relationship with You. Help me to break out of any rut I’m in so that I can connect with You and hear You speak. I want my faith to be the most reviving and energizing thing about my life. Cultivate in me a heart that longs for time spent in Your Word. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Shirley Bearry ... "I know the plans I have for you..." Jer. 29:11
Shirley, along with her husband Phil, became members of the Emmett First Baptist Church (FBC) on January 31, 2021. Shirley has helped in the Nursery and participated in Women’s Groups. She also served as “Usherette” on Sunday mornings.
Shirley and Phil moved to Emmett in March of 2018. Phil had recently been baptized in the Catholic church and Shirley was raised Catholic, so they intended to go to the Catholic Church. However, their first visit did not go real well. Since they didn’t know better, they assumed you would go in the front door of the church. That took them right into the middle of the service with everyone looking at them. They realized they should have come in the side door. Then after the service, everyone disappeared. They did not know where everyone went until they were able to stop someone in the parking lot and learned they all went to coffee or something. From there they went to Community Bible church and the people were very friendly and Shirley joined a women’s study. Then Phil became sick, and COVID-19 occurred. When they were ready to return to church, since Shirley was baptized in a Baptist Church, she decided to call FBC, met with Lance and Kathy and ultimately became members. Shirley says her favorite thing about our church is the “people are friendly”.
Shirley was baptized in August of 1985 at Grace Baptist in Antioch, CA. Shirley explained that when her daughter, Ginger, at 3 1/2 years old, came home and told her John 3:16, she hadn’t known what it was, but her daughter had planted a seed; although she didn’t water that seed for a while. Then later, while attending Tabernacle Baptist School, her daughter came home at Christmas time and told Shirley the Christmas Story. Ginger had memorized it!
At the time, Shirley liked her Rum and Coke, as well as cigarettes. One day, she asked her daughter if she wanted to pray with her and Ginger prayed for a new mommy, which broke Shirley’s heart. Shirley explained that she was convicted by the Holy Spirit by her daughter’s prayer. She began to pray more, memorize scriptures to help her with temptations and she quit drinking and smoking. Her husband at that time was a Baptist but was not practicing. A friend of her husband, whom they referred to as Grandpa Bob, was very influential in her husband’s life. Grandpa Bob and a Deacon of the church came to their house one time and prayed with her to accept Jesus. The next Sunday she went to Grace Baptist in Antioch and was baptized. They told her she needed to tell someone, but she was nervous and had a hard time talking about it because she was very shy. However, she joined a lady’s group and eventually was able to talk about it. Now she loves to talk about the Lord and her faith.
Shirley is the 3rd eldest of 10 children. She liked being from a big family. In 27 1/2 years, she did not see her mom and dad fight. Her dad passed away at the age of 49. She was very close to her dad who was raised Baptist but became a Catholic. He was very committed to his faith and lived it. He was a loving father. Shirley always wanted to make her dad proud, and she believes he would proud of her now.
When Shirley graduated high school, her mom told her to fill the car with gas and sent her off to find a job, telling her not to come home until she found one. She initially applied for a job at JC Penney’s, but they told her she would have to dye her bright red hair to be hired. While at her boyfriend’s house, his mother received a phone call from someone wanting to hire her boyfriend’s sister. But since his sister had moved to Texas, his mother told them about Shirley and that she was looking for a job. She interviewed and got the job at a convalescent home where Shirley assisted the Nurse. After a bad experience with one of the patients, Shirly was going to quit but was persuaded to stay on and work in the kitchen. She did that, learned a lot, loved it and was there for several years. She and her husband at that time moved to Antioch and she worked a couple more jobs but ultimately worked from home with her husband’s business. When her husband got an offer to buy Anderson flooring, they decided to take 4 days off, go away and prayed about it. When they did not receive even one call on their own business after 4 days, they knew the answer was yes and they bought it.
Shirley’s passion is people. But there was a time in her life when she had been afraid of people, which may have led to her reliance on alcohol. Although she was not an alcoholic, she believes she could have been had she not found the Lord as alcohol changes a personality and made her bold. However, she is no longer afraid of people… “people are people” and she likes people.
Shirley, like most of us, has had various struggles in her life and her faith has helped her overcome them. When asked about struggles her faith has helped her overcome, Shirley stated, “she did not have to stay in an abusive marriage” and referred to Jeremiah 29:11. She then explained that when you remember or talk about those things, it gives credence to it and she is now above that....to clarify, Shirley explained that God carried her through that time and she does not want to ponder on the past.
Shirley was in a serious motorcycle accident on June 24, 2005, where she was the passenger on the motorcycle when they were rear-ended by a 55-year-old man going 55 mph in a 25-mph zone. She was thrown 75 feet in the air, into the oncoming traffic, and landed on the motorcycle which had landed on her previous husband. Shirley described the sensation of a hand picking her up by the hips into the air and feels that was the hand of God. She was life flighted to the hospital. Her insides were torn up, and to this day suffers from short-term memory loss.
Shirley strongly believes in the power of prayer. She referred to the Book of Revelation stating how sweet prayers are to God.. the aroma of prayer (Rev. 5:8). She stated that when she closes her eyes, she sees His eye on her…blue eyes. When she is doing something wrong, His eyes are closed but when she prays and ask forgiveness, they open again. Shirley would rather be close to God than people (while her passion is people, she want to please God more than pleasing people). She diligently prays for people and says it is important to know when prayers are answered.
The most recent prayer answered for her was she and Phil’s move to Emmett. Phil had lived in Grass Valley/Auburn, California for 63 years in a town with 12,000 people. The town kept growing until they decided they needed to move. They prayed about where to go. God put it on Shirley’s heart to move to Idaho. Her daughter lives in Idaho Falls but that was too cold. They looked at Star, Eagle, Nampa and Caldwell but “Emmet kept coming into her brain”. In March of 2018, the passes opened, and they came to Emmett. They walked into the 1st house the Realtor showed them. There were scriptures everywhere on the walls. When she saw Jer. 29:11 on the wall she said “Phil, we’re home”. They went outside and told the Realtor they didn’t want to see any more houses. They made an offer and in 14 days they moved in and put their home in California up for sale. It sold within 2 months.
Reading this article, you may have realized Shirley’s favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11:
‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You will know Shirley by her quick little jokes and friendliness. If you have had the benefit of getting to know Shirley as I have, you would see the strength and compassion behind her joyful and humorous personality. Shirley and I have had the opportunity to swap heartfelt moments and stories and I have truly appreciated that opportunity.
Shirly has an ambitious desire to help however she can and shows compassion to people… visiting my dad in his final days and bringing his favorite apple pie (twice!), as well as helping with dinners for him and others who have been sick or had surgeries; befriending her neighbors (Jim Foster’s brother & sister-in-law) and helping while she was ill, taking her to appointments or cleaning the home, etc..; donating or giving away items she no longer needs (e.g. high quality shoes, a pontoon boat).
Shirley, thank you for doing the interview with me and for being who you are!
Message from Dominic Bunting
Dominic Bunting, the CERT student we contributed to via our 2022 Advent Conspiracy has shared the following update with Pastor Lance:
First week of ministry:·
- Dominic and two others were sent off to a small village for church building. They got to play and hangout with about 20 kids and sit in on their lesson.
- He and another individual were sent to a different village and he shared a testimony.
- He and one of the outreach leaders are going to build a bathroom for a village. (He commented that he hoped it would not be too hot out.)
- They worked with a program called Salt where they work with kids who are at risk and who come from troubled homes. It was the first time meeting them, so the main focus was on building relationships with them by joining them in their soccer practice.
He will be staying at the YWAM Battambang campus for 4 more weeks and then stay at the village for two weeks and then we will go to Phnom Penh for the rest of our outreach.
Dominic appreciates the thoughts and prayers. Please continue prayers for Dominic!
The Voice of the Martyrs
“The more faithful we are, the more serious the opposition.”
Are Christians living in free nations, like the United States, prepared to face persecution for their faith in Christ and witness for his kingdom? If persecution is a biblical promise to all believers (2 Tim. 3:12), how should American Christians and those in other free nations prepare?
Listen in as Cole Richards, president of VOM, offers insights and advice on this uncomfortable topic. He also introduces a new resource from VOM that will help Christians prepare for persecution through the inspiring stories of our sisters in Christ, modern-day Sabina Wurmbrands who have already faced persecution and victoriously endured.
Cole talks about adjusting our thinking to understand that we will face troubles of many kinds as we follow Christ and that those troubles are an expected part of the Christian life.
